Abstract

814,953. Cold-cathode tubes : cathode materials. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Aug. 20, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956], No. 26321/57. Class 39(1). A gaseous discharge device which may exhibit a negative resistance characteristic comprises a ceramic envelope made in two parts which when joined together provide means for supporting the anode and cathode. In one form, the two halves 11, 12, Fig. 1, provides a cathode cavity 22 and supports 17 for the wire anode 20. The metallised surfaces 25, 27 and 29 complete the cavity cathode, the cathode lead and the anode lead respectively. The cathode cavity is connected to the interior of the envelope through the orifice 23. Means for producing the initial ionisation required in gas filled tubes is provided e.g. a spot of radium bromide 30. No lead-in wires or supports other than those provided by the envelope are required. In another form one of the pillars, 17, may be omitted and the cathode may be in a U-shaped groove, 35, Fig. 4, the anode, 38 being bent at the end 39. In both cases the anode connection to the exterior of the envelope is provided by the exhaust tubulation, 15, but this may be omitted and the tube sealed in the correct atmosphere. The filling may be of neon at a pressure of 90 mm. of mercury, the envelope of aluminium oxide, the cathode and metallised strips of zirconium, molybdenum or columbium.
