Abstract
A twisted yarn composed of staple fibres obtained from drawn or stretched filaments of a highly polymeric ester produced by heating one or more glycols of the series HO.(CH2)n.OH, where n is greater than 1 but not greater than 10, with terephthalic acid or an ester forming derivative thereof, is subjected to a twist-setting treatment which comprises a heat treatment at a temperature at least 5 DEG C. higher than the temperature at which the filaments were drawn, or subsequently heated, whichever was the highest, but less, preferably at least 30 DEG C. less than the melting point of the yarn, while maintaining the yarn under tension. The polymer may be obtained from ethylene glycol or trimethylene, tetramethylene, hexamethylene, or decamethylene glycol, and terephthalic acid or an ester, acid halide, ammonium, or amine salt thereof. Drawing of the filaments may take place at temperatures above 60 DEG C. Crimped continuous filaments may be used for conversion to staple fibres. Yarns of heavier denier may be obtained by plying or cabling lighter weight yarns. The yarns may be plied and cabled to give a sewing thread. The twist setting may be effected by passing the yarn into contact with a heated surface such as a hot metal roller, a heated metal pin, or a metal pin with a non-metallic covering, or it may be effected by passing the yarn through a heated inert liquid, or through a hot inert gas, or by infra-red rays. The twisted yarn may be passed round a heated metal roll or set of rolls, and it may then be collected on a roll or set of rolls rotating at the same or slightly lower speed. In the latter case a small amount of shrinkage takes place but unlimited shrinkage should be avoided and the yarn should be under tension until cooled to room temperature. The treatment may be applied to highly twisted yarns which are to be used in the production of crepe fabrics or which are to be used as sewing threads. Twist-setting may be effected on the travelling yarn or while it is in package form. The treatment may be carried out on yarns containing a minor proportion of other fibres, e.g. cotton, wool, or rayon staple fibres. If such yarns are allowed to relax during twist-setting, fancy effects may be obtained due to uneven shrinkage of the constituent fibres. Specification 603,840 is referred to.
