Abstract

518,710. Yarns and threads; spinning &c. machines. CARBIDE & CARBON CHEMICALS CORPORATION. Aug. 27, 1938. No. 28811/39. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1937. Divided out of 518,555. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Group IV] Artificial filaments, fibres, yarns, and threads are made by dry spinning a solution of a conjoint polymer of a vinyl halide and vinyl ester of an aliphatic acid, e.g., vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, the polymer having a molecular weight of at least 15,000. The filaments may be delustred while on the take-up bobbins by treatment with a stream of hot water. Before being spun to yarn the filaments may be allowed to age or may be immersed in hot water. The yarns may be subjected to stretching operations preferably while they are wet with water. The stretch may be set by maintaining the filaments in stretched condition 'at a temperature below 75‹C. The water used for the stretching operation may contain a wetting agent. The stretched yarns may be subjected to abrupt flexing at high speeds while immersed in water. They may be passed over rollers of small diameter to effect abrupt changes in direction. During twisting, doubling, skeining, coning or like operations, the filaments or yarns may be lubricated with water containing if desired a wetting agent. In an example, filaments of vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate polymer from a dry spinning apparatus are passed to take up bobbins. The traverse arms controlling the cake-build on these bobbins are provided with tubes through which hot water is directed on to the filaments. The wound filaments are then twisted. stretched, and flexed. Specification 518,555 is referred to.
