Abstract

729,097. Centrifugal pumps; turbines; jetpropulsion plant. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. March 25, 1953, No. 8221/53. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). A turbine comprises a nozzle ring 20, Fig. 1, adjacent a turbine rotor 17, a shroud 21 at the inlet side of the ring 20 to define a chamber for the supply of working fluid to the nozzles 20b, and a further shroud 25 at the discharge side of the ring 20 to define an expansion chamber for the rotor 17. The turbine drives the impeller 12 of a centrifugal pump through a shaft 11 journalled in a casing 10. The pump volute is formed as a spiral recess 10c. The annular space between the ring 20 and casing 10 is filled by casting in a deposit 24 of metal of low melting point and relatively light weight. Fig. 4 shows the application of the unit to a ram-jet engine. Some of the air flowing through the engine is intercepted by a sheet metal conduit 36 and led to the turbine inlet for use as the driving fluid. If desired, the turbine exhaust may be directed to external atmosphere by way of a conduit 39. The pump draws fuel from a container 31 through a conduit 34 and delivers it through a pipe 37 to burner nozzles 38.
