Abstract

1284596 Liquid seals ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 20 Dec 1969 62167/69 Heading F2B A liquid seal for a gas or steam turbine or a compressor of a gas turbine engine comprises a reservoir 20 which retains the liquid (e.g. a polyphenol ether based lubricant) by centrifugal force, a stepped flange 30 which consists of first and second outer and inner portions 33, 34 and which projects into the reservoir, and liquid supply means, such as pumps 40, 44 and ducts 36, 38, for continuously supplying liquid to and removing liquid from the reservoir. The liquid seal, as shown, prevents the high pressure air in the passages 52, 50 and 56 for cooling the hollow rotor blades 12 in a gas turbine from reaching the low pressure gases in the flow duct 14. The liquid is drawn from the reservoir by the pump 44 assisted by a "scooping" action of the tangentially disposed inlet 38 to the duct 46. After passing through a heat exchanger 48 the liquid is delivered by the pump 40 back to the reservoir, the discharge duct 36 being arranged, if desired, to spray the liquid against the face 15 of the rotor disc 10.
