Abstract

728,709. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. April 12, 1954 [Jan. 28, 1953], No. 2413/53. Class 103 (1). In a " spot-type " disc brake, the housing for opposed friction pads incorporating means for moving one pad in a direction parallel to the axis of the brake disc is mounted to rock about a fixed axis at right angles to that of the disc and the pads are angularly movable in the housing such that their operative faces remain parallel to the surface of the disc and wear of the pads remain uniform. In the embodiment illustrated, the brake disc 10 is bolted to a flange 11 on a hub 12 adapted to carry a vehicle wheel and rotatably mounted on a stub axle 13. A housing 14 straddles the periphery of the disc and is provided with spaced parallel arms 15 which are mounted at their inner ends in trunnion bearings 16 carried by the non- rotatable stub axle mounting. The axis of the bearings is at right angles to the axis of the wheel and the disc, but lies on the opposite side of that axis from the housing in order to minimize the angular movement of the housing as the friction pads wear. Braking is effected by means of a hydraulically-actuated piston 20 which actuates a cap 22 which has bonded to it a friction pad 23. Reaction on the housing 14 causes a second friction pad 32, bonded to a cap 32 secured to the housing 14, to engage the opposite face of the brake disc 10. Both caps 22 and 32 are provided with part-spherical convex roar faces which engage complementary part spherical concave recesses in the inner face of the piston 20 and the housing 14 respectively and are secured thereto by spring mounted bolts 24 and 33 respectively which permit the caps to rock in their mountings when the brake is applied and when the housing 14 moves angularly to accommodate wear of the pads so that the operative faces of the pads will remain parallel to the surfaces of the brake disc to ensure substantially uniform wear of the pads over their whole area. A modification is described and illustrated in which the caps and complementary abutments on the housing and piston are provided with part-cylindrical surfaces and opposed parallel flats so that the pads are prevented from rotating in the housing. The friction pads may be cylindrical, rectangular, segmental or any other sectional form. Specification 700,579 is referred to.
