Abstract

761,479. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. June 3, 1955 [June 4, 1954], No. 16561/54. Class 103 (1). In an hydraulically operated " spot-type " disc brake, members associated with the opposed friction pads are positively coupled together by a coupling member which prevents appreciable movement of either pad away from the brake disc through the engagement of the other pad with the opposite face of the disc, the coupling member incorporating sliding ratchet whereby its effective length is automatically and progressively reduced as the friction pads wear. In a disc brake in which non-rotatable hydraulically operated piston and cylinder mechanisms 21 are situated on either side of a rotatable brake disc 10, covering a small portion only of the periphery on the brake disc 10 ; the latter being secured to the vehicle wheel 16, and pads of friction material 25 are adapted to engage the radially extending sides of the brake disc (Fig. 2 showing the right-hand pad in the unworn state and the left-hand pad in the worn state). Each pad of friction material is provided with a rigid backing plate 24 which is backed by a thrust member 23 secured to a piston 22. Each backing plate 24 is prevented from relative angular movement by a peg 27. Secured to each backing plate 24 is a lug 29 ; one lug carrying a screw-threaded rod 30 which passes freely through a hole in the other lug. A sheet metal collet member 33 is mounted on the latter lug and provided with spring fingers 34 -engaging the screw thread on the rod to prevent any appreciable movement of the friction pads away from each other when they are frictionally applied; as for instance when the vehicle is travelling round a corner and the lateral movement of the brake discs tends to push one of the friction pads away from the disc. As the friction pads wear, the backing plate 24 moves towards each other and the spring fingers automatically engage the next thread to shorten the effective length of the rod and so maintain the correct relative spacing between the operative surfaces of the friction pads. Axial expansion of the disc when heated is allowed for by elongating the hole in the rod 30 for the pin 31 in the first lug 24. Specification 688,382 is referred to.
