Abstract
The age-resistance of vulcanizates of natural and synthetic rubber is increased by compounding with the unvulcanized mix an aliphatic amine which is able to react with, or dissolve completely at least 25 per cent. and preferably 40 per cent. of its weight of sulphur at a temperature between 120 and 140 DEG C. The amine may be used in a proportion of 1 to 2 parts by weight to 100 parts of rubber. The amine is preferably a substituted propylene diamine such as di - gamma - aminopropylamine, gamma - dimethyl - aminopropylamine, gamma - diethylaminopropylamine, gamma - piperidinepropylamine, di - gamma - methylaminopropylamine, dimethylaminopropyl - gamma - aminopropylamine, and also bis - trimethylenediamine and N - methyl - bis - trimethylene-diamine. The amine may be added in conjunction with a pyrogenically produced metal or metalloid oxide, or aluminium oxide or silicon dioxide produced by wet precipitation. If sufficient sulphur is added then the quantity of accelerator may be reduced or omitted altogether. In examples, a mix is made from smoked sheets, carbon black or silica, stearic acid, pine tar, phenylbetanaphthylamine, zinc oxide, accelerator and sulphur, and from 1.5 to 2.5 per cent. based on the rubber of either gamma-piperidine propylamine or di-gamma-aminopropylamine is added.
