Abstract

A reaction product of tall oil and an aliphatic amine which is capable of reacting with at least 25 per cent of its weight of sulphur at a temperature between 120 DEG and 140 DEG C. is incorporated in a vulcanizable elastomer composition before vulcanization in a quantity of 0.5 to 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of elastomer. The tall oil amine reaction product may be obtained by reacting tall oil with an amine containing at least one amino group per three carbon atoms, e.g. di-g -amino propylamine, and is preferably mixed with a filler such as finely divided silica before incorporation in the rubber composition. Examples are described in which various amounts of a reaction product of tall oil and di-g -amino-propylamine are incorporated in a mix comprising smoked sheets, pyrogenically produced silica, stearic acid, pine tar, phenyl betanaphthylamine, zinc oxide, sulphur, and vulcanization accelerator, and the composition vulcanized. The addition of the talloil amine reaction product reduces the vulcanizing period without a comparative reduction in the scorch period.
