[Class 140] Laminated sheet material is prepared by a process characterized by juxtaposing a film comprising an organic thermoplastic material and a substantially continuous layer of unwoven fibres at least partially comprising thermoplastic fibres and applying heat and pressure to cause the film and fibres to adhere together without impregnating the fibre layer with the film material. The film may be non- self-supporting and may be of thermoplastic resins such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, vinyl chloride acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride methyl methacrylate copolymers, polyvinylacetal, polyvinyl butyral, polymethylmethacrylate, coumarone - indene with rubber, oil-modified alkyd resins, alkyd resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, polymethylacrylate, polyethylene, and polyamides, or thermoplastic cellulose compounds such as cellulose acetate, acetate butyrate, acetate propionate, and propionate and benzyl, ethyl, butyl and hydroxy ethyl cellulose, or thermosetting resins in a thermoplastic stage such as urea-formaldehyde, and others or mixtures of thermoplastic and thermosetting resins. The film may be formed by extruding or casting a solution or molten mass of the material or by calendering the plastic mass into a film, or the film may be formed on a temporary backing sheet and then removed. A minor proportion of short fibres may be incorporated into the material from which the film is made. The fibrous layer may be of natural fibres such as cotton, hemp, jute, flax, kapok, leather, silk, wool, hair, fur, animal or asbestos, or artificial fibres such as glass, rock, casein, gelatin, zein, viscose rayon, and acetate rayon, or of thermoplastic resins such as polyvinyl chloride and many others or of thermoplastic cellulose compounds such as the acetate, acetate butyrate, acetate propionate, propionate, or benzyl, ethyl, butyl and hydroxy ethyl cellulose. The preferred fibrous layer is made by mixing together a minor proportion of thermoplastic textile fibres with non-thermoplastic textile fibres by dispersing the two types in a common gaseous atmosphere and depositing the mixture on the surface. The fibrous layer may be treated to render the thermoplastic fibres adhesive, e.g. by treating with a solvent, hot air, steam, heated plates or rollers with or without pressure. Prior to adhering to the film the loose unwoven fibres may be matted by carding and drafting, or combing. The film and/or the fibres may be coloured with either the same or a different colour and may be compounded with waterproofing agents such as wax, asphalt or resins or with fireproofing or germicidal agents.
