726,357. Severing by tearing. BAUMGARTNER, J. R. May 4, 1953, No. 12332/53. Class 31 (1). In mechanism for separating a partially severed carton or box blank from the web in which it is formed or from an adjacent blank in a multiple set of blanks and for removing waste portions from the blank which has been partially severed to have waste portions at the sides thereof, part of the waste portions and part of the blank being located respectively to project from opposite ends of the separated blank, the mechanism includes opposed sets of spaced endless feeding belts 22, 23 for continuously feeding the blank forward and continuously operable feeding rollers 24, 25 spaced at such a distance from the belts 22, 23 as to engage only the projecting part at one end of the blank while the projecting part at the other end of the blank is engaged by the belts 22, 23, the rollers 24, 25 being operable at a higher speed than the belts 22, 23 to produce a differential pull on the projecting parts to shear off the side waste from the blank. The web W is fed to an intermittently-operated blanking press 16, 17 by means of feed rollers 14, 15, the roller 15 being associated with a brake 21 in such a way that the brake is effective when the roller 15 is separated from the roller 14. Pressure is exerted on the belts 22, 23 to engage the blanks by means of two pairs of longitudinallyadjustable nip rollers 33, 43 and 34, 42, the rollers 33, 43 functioning to separate a single partially severed blank B, Fig. 10, or a multiple set of blanks 1B, 2B, 3B, Fig. 11, from the web, and the rollers 34, 42 functioning in conjunction with the rollers 24, 25 to separate the leading blank of the multiple set of blanks. For handling single cut blanks, the belts 22, 23 may be shortened and the rollers 34, 42 dispensed with. Resilient fingers disposed between the belts 22 assist these belts to hold the blank and its waste upon the belts 23 and also press on the waste portions C. Deflection of the waste portions may be assisted by a member 28. The cut blanks are delivered in succession by rollers 26, 27 to a continuously operating delivery conveyer 29 above which are adjustably mounted axially-spaced pressure rollers 83 and intervening spring fingers for preventing upward deflection of the blanks as they are carried along to a trough 30.
