Patented Mar. 18, 1939 LOUIS H. SCHROEDER, OF WOODHAVEN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PROGRESSIVE COR- RUGATED PAPER TION OF NEW YORK MACHINERY 00. rim,
or BROOKLYN, NEW- YORK, A CORPORA- TAPING MACHINE FOR BOX BLANKS Application filed April 17,
The invention relates to a machine for applying tape to the abutting side edges of corrugated paper board box blanks, and more particularly to the operation of-pressing the tape in'position against such side edges. Machines for the above purpose have been known and used for many years wherein the box blanks, after having had the tape applied along their side edges which are desired to be secured together, are fed between pressure members, usually in the form of traveling conveyor belts, which serve to press the tape in position.
The present invention aims primarily to provide a machine which will more adequately press the tape into proper engagement with the blank and provide a stronger taped box corner on the blank, without injuring or breaking down the structure of the corrugated box board of which the blanks usually are made. In the drawings Fig. lis a side elevation", with certain parts cut away, of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken on line 22 ofFig. 1.
The illustrated machine contains many features, the specific nature of which are not essential to the present inventionand which,
accordingly, will not be described in detail since machines for performing similar :functions have been in practical use for many years.
As shown in Fig. 1, such a machine may have side guides 1 adapted to hold a stack of blanks 2 in position over a table 3, in such a manner that pusher bars 4 carried by traveling belts 5 periodically advance the then lowermost blank of the stack to a mechanism denoted generally by numeral 6, which at the proper-time feeds a strip of gummed tape 7 into the path of travel of the blank, as the blank passes between a pair of rolls 8 and 9 carrying traveling conveyor belts 10 and 11 which move the taped blank along until it passes out of the machine between similar rolls 12 and 13 at the delivery end of the machine. Suitable devices such as rollers 14, journaled and pivoted arms 15, which are urged toward the blank by spring 16 (Fig.
1929. Serial No. 355,753.
2), are employed to exert pressure 011 the tapedblank as it passes along. Additional rollers 17 (Fig. 2) also are usually employed on the opposite side of the blank.
I have found that if the tape be pressed against the abutting edges of the blank by a member having a bluntly beveled raised portion on its surface which engages the tape, the tape will be with much greater certainty secured throughout its entire undersurface to the blank (without wrinkles or blisters), and the resulting box corner will be much stronger, and with much reduced likelihood of being crushed. For example, as shown in Fig. 2, the conveyor member 11 which engages the integral side 18 of the box blank, is provided with a plane surface 19, which underlies the box blank, as has been standard practice in machines of the abovetype for ten years or upwards. The conveyor member 10 however which is pressed against the taped surface of the box blank, is provided with a bluntly beveled raised portion 20, which bears against the .tape 7, the tape overlying the which engage the upper surface of the blank on opposite sides of tape 7, are made plane with the result that the beveled portion 20 of the conveyor member shapes the tape and the edges 21 of the box blank into the crosssectional form shown in Fig. 2, Without however unduly crushing the corrugations of the blank.
While a specific form of the invention has been described it should be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from its substance as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim: 1
1. A box blank taping machine having means for advancing a blankto be taped,
means for feeding astrip of tape to the path of travel of the blank, and a pair of traveling conveyor members positioned to receive the blank and tape between them and press the tape against the blank, one of said members having a substantially plane surface engageable with one face of the blank and the i 2 v 1,7so,o4a
other of said members also having substantially plane surfaces engageable with the remaimng face of the blank on opposite sides of the tape, said last mentioned member hav- 6 ing a bluntly beveled raised portion between its above mentioned plane surfaces and engageable with said tape. v
2. A box blank tapin machine havin means foradvancing a lank to 'be tape means for feeding a strip of tape to the path of travel of the blank, and a pressure applying member positioned to bear against the taped side of the blank, said member having a bluntly beveled raised portion positioned to 15 engage the tape.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
' LOUIS H. SCHROEDER.
