In cable railways in which carriages 9 are moved along an endless loop track 2 by an endless traction cable 1; the coupling and uncoupling of the carriages 9 to and from the endless traction cable are respectively effected by temporarily arresting on retarding the cable by drawing it in at the entrance to the coupling or uncoupling section 6 and paying it out at the exit end of the section 6, while a gradual increase in speed of the said cable within the section 6 can be effected by varying the movement of the arresting devices relative to one another. The cable 1 is drawn in at the entrance to the section 6 by lowering a pulley 7 and at the exit end of the section 6 the cable is paid out by raising a pulley 8. The speed of the cable 1 through the section 6 is varied by adjusting the rate of vertical movement of the pulleys 7 and 8.
