Abstract

724,726. Lubricating. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS, Inc. April 22, 1953 [June 19, 1952], No. 11069/53, Class 12 (3). An arrangement for by-passing a filter for lubricant to be supplied to bearings comprises a base with passages for connection to a pump and to the bearings, a filter supported by the base, a chamber communicating with the inlet passageway and having a by-pass opening communicating with the inlet passageway, and valve means movable in said chamber and such that at pressure values of lubricant in said chamber above a predetermined value, the lubricant flows through the filter on its way from the pump to the bearings, whereas when the pressure of lubricant falls below said value the by-pass opening is put in communication with the inlet passageway so that lubricant by-passes the filter. In the arrangement shown, an engine block 10 is provided with passageways 11, 12 communicating respectively with a pump and with the bearings. A base 13 is secured to the block 10 with recesses 14, 15 registering respectively with the passageways 11, 12. The base 13 has secured to its upper surface a filter 44. The recess 14 leads to a passageway 26 containing a piston valve 28 which is opened at a pressure of about ¢ to 1 lb. per square inch. On the upper side of the valve is a passageway 31 communicating at one end with the outside of the filter and at the other end leading to a valve chamber 32 provided with two oppositely biased pistons 34, 35. The spring 36 of piston 34 is stronger than the spring 37. When lubricant is supplied at or above a predetermined pressure e.g. 20 lbs. per square inch, valve 35 is kept on its seat 39, thereby closing a by-pass outlet 40a leading to the bearings, and the lubricant is forced through the filter. If the pressure falls below the predetermined value the stronger spring acts through a rod 38 connected to valve 34, to open the valve 35 thereby uncovering the opening 40a and allowing lubricant to flow to the bearings without passing through the filter.
