Abstract

724,409. Heat pumps for cooling air and heating liquids in bulk. PATTERSON & ASSOCIATES, Inc., V.C. Feb. 10, 1953, No. 3693/53. Classes 29, 64 (1) and 64 (3). Apparatus for cooling. air and heating water comprises an insulated hot-water tank 10 and a refrigerating system having a sealed motor compressor unit 11 in a recess in the tank to heat the latter, a high pressure gas pipe 15 connected to a vertical pipe 20 within the tank and surrounded by a concentric pipe 19 the top and bottom of which are joined by vertical pipes 21 serving as water heaters and coolers and condensers for the refrigerant, a supercooler 22 for the liquid refrigerant and for preheating the water, an expansion valve 18, an evaporator 13 mounted on the top of the tank and fitted with a variable-speed air-circulating fan 14 and a thermal element 26 responsive to. the temperature of the water to stop the compressor motor at predetermined maximum water temperature. According to the invention, a switch 27 is provided for cutting out the thermal control to allow air cooling even when waterheating is not required, excessive heating of the water being obviated by bleeding off hot water from the tank. The switch 27 may be controlled by a humidostat or thermostat subject to conditions of the air being cooled. For drying the air, the speed of fan 14 is reduced by a switch 28 thus allowing the slower-moving air to be cooled more. Switch 28 may be controlled manually or by a theromostat or humidostat. As shown in Fig. 1, a valve 29 subject to the outlet pressure of the compressor allows water to escape from the tank when the discharge pressure rises due to an increase in condensing temperature. As shown in Fig. 5, the tank 10 has a valve 33 opened by a thermal element 32 when the temperature of the water rises e.g. ten degrees higher than the setting of thermal element 26. The bleeding valve may be located in the main outlet 24 of the tank. A baffle 25 is welded to the pipe 19 to improve stratification of the water in the tank. U.S.A. Specifications, 2,516,093 and 2,516,094 are referred to.
