Abstract
731,261. Refrigerating; hot-water supply systems; heating water. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 19, 1952 [March 20, 1951], No. 7105/52. Classes 29, 64 (1) and 64 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] In a water-heating and roomcooling system comprising a compressor-condenser-evaporator refrigerating system, the condenser 76 heats water in a vertical vessel 50 the upper and lower parts of which are connected by conduits 33, 37 to the upper and lower parts of a vertical water storage tank 15 so that there is a thermosiphon circulation, and the evaporator 49 cools the room air. A thermally actuated valve 89 is arranged in the conduit 33. The valve 89 is closed, except for a small aperture, until a predetermined temperature in the conduit 33 has been reached. The tank 15 has a cold water supply pipe 36 and a hot water outlet 31, which is also connected to a waste pipe 140 through a solenoidactuated valve 137 normally held closed by a spring. A three-way valve 69 allows the conduit 37 or the chamber 50 to be connected to a drain outlet 71. The waterheating chamber is cup-shaped and is formed between inner and outer flanged shells. The water is heated by the helically-coiled tubular condenser 76. Vapour from the evaporator 49 is dried by silica gel in a drying chamber 87, and flows into a casing 81 surrounding a compressor 83 and its motor 82. The compressor draws the vapour from the casing. If the pressure of the refrigerant becomes excessive, a bellows opens a switch 107 to stop the motor. An electric control system (see Group XXXV) can be adjusted so that the fan and compressor are stopped either when the tank 15 is full of hot water or when the temperature of the air in the room has been reduced to a desired level. In the latter case the waste valve 137 is intermittently opened and closed to release hot water from the tank when it is full of hot water until the desired air temperature is reached.
