Abstract

724,241. Control of several motors. BRYANT CHUCKING GRINDER CO. Sept. 4,1952 [Oct. 5, 1951], No. 22285/52. Class 38 (3) [Also in Group XXIII] Four electric motors 2M, 3M, 4M, 5M for driving the operative parts of a grinding machine (see Group XXIII) are controlled by switches and relays arranged in a low-voltage control circuit so as to enable the machine to carry out an automatic cycle. The control circuit is connected through a transformer 171 with the supply to the motors and includes relays 2m, 3m, 4m, 5m for the respective motors. The closure of a switch 175 acts through the relay 2m to energize the motor 2M to rotate the grinding wheel, and the closure of a second switch 190 acts through the relay 3m to energize the motor 3M to drive a main cam shaft. Cams on this shaft then close a switch LS4 to energize a relay 4m to drive the work spindle motor 4M and also effect controlled movements of the grinding wheel and work carriages. A further cam on the shaft also actuates a switch LS6 to de-energize a relay CR, the contacts 205, 215, 216 of which then serve, respectively, to (a) close the circuit of the relay 5m to drive the motor 5M for rotating a second cam shaft, (b) de-energize a clutch 165 between the motor 3M and the main cam shaft, and (c) apply a brake 166 to the latter motor. Cams on the second cam shaft then effect further controlled movements of the work carriage, followed by actuation of a switch LS7 whereby the relay CR is energized to stop the motor 5M and restart the drive of the first cam shaft by the motor 3M. Further movements of the two carriages under the control of the main cam shaft follow until the switch LS6 changes over the drive to the second cam shaft which, after providing additional movement of the work carriage, actuates the switch LS7 so that the main cam shaft takes over to return the carriages to their inoperative positions.
