Abstract

481,021. Grinding. ELLIS, L. S. E. (Maag-Zahnrader und Maschinen Aht.-Ges.) Aug. 31, 1936, No. 23833. [Class 60] In a grinding-machine, intended particularly for gear grinding, means are provided, including a feeler contacting with the grinding-wheel, for automatically advancing the wheel in an axial direction to compensate for wear of the side operative face of the wheel. The wheel 5 is mounted on a spindle 4 in a bushing 2 slidable but non-rotatable in a support 1, and adjacent the operative face of the wheels is a feeler lever 6 provided with a hard insert and moved by a rotary cam 9 so that it contacts intermittently with the wheel. When the operative face is worn, the lever moves sufficiently to close the electric circuit of a magnet 7, thereby attracting an armature 8 and engaging a clutch 10, one part of which is carried by a continuously rotating shaft 11, and thereby rotating a shaft 12. This shaft carries, on a crank 13, a pawl 14, which rotates a ratchet wheel 215 and a pinion 216, thereby driving a gear-wheel 217 integral with a nut 218, which engages a thread 102 on the bushing 2. The nut is held against axial movement by faces 200, 201, so that its rotary movement advances the bushing 2 and the wheel 5 axially ; the apparatus is re-set, when a new wheel 5 is fitted, by a knob 226 on the shaft 203 of the pinion 216.
