Abstract
722,960. Cooling-towers. McFARLAND, D., HADFIELD, H. M., and MARNELL, T. Oct. 15, 1953. [Oct. 16, 1952] No. 25922/52. Class 64 (1). Channels 3 in the base of a cooling-tower pond slope from the centre 4 of the base to the bottom of an inner pond wall 1, and each discharge through the bottom of the wall into an annular pond extension 11 formed by an outer wall 12. A run-off gap 13 is formed in the outer wall 12, and flushing outlets 16 are provided from the bottom of the annular pond extension 11. Settled sludge is removed either continuously or, by the use of control valves in the outlets 16, at regular intervals. A sludge trough is formed round the bottom of the annular extension 11, and the flushing outlets 16 lead from the trough to an annular sludge spillway 15 which surrounds the pond. The channels 3 are radial, and their bottoms 5 slope downwardly from their sides to flushing troughs 7 each running centrally below each channel. Each trough 7 is covered by tiles, some or all of which are perforated.
