Abstract

721,399. Pistons; cylinders. WALESSTRIPPIT CORPORATION. Aug. 29, 1952, No. 21799/52. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXXII] A piston 22 in a liquid spring device operates in a cylinder 23, Fig. 2, communicating with a chamber 21 for compressible liquid, the cylinder being compressible in response to pressure of the liquid to reduce the clearance between it and the piston. The piston 22 has a piston head 22a which carries a conventional ring seal 25 intended to function at low liquid pressures. When the piston is projected further into the casing 21, the walls of the cylinder 23 are sprung into metal-to-metal contact with the piston head 22a by the effect of the liquid pressure developed. The piston and cylinder may be made of different metals. The piston head 22a may be dispensed with, Fig. 8; the ring seal is then formed in the piston rod. Back-up ring-seals may be provided. In Fig. 8 the distortion of the cylinder wall is confined to an annular zone 128. This may be located at the inner end of the cylinder, Fig. 11 (not shown).
