721,131. Tilting pad bearings. CULAUD, A., and ATELIERS DES CHARMILLES SOC. ANON. Aug. 18, 1953 [Nov. 12, 1952]. No. 23835/53. Class 12 (1). In a thrust bearing of the type in which a layer of oil is maintained between a rotary ring 1 and a ring of non-rotary shoes 2 carried on pistons 3 disposed in cylinders 4 which are filled with oil under pressure and are connected with each other, thereby equalizing the pressure on the shoes 2, an adjustable wedge device 11, 14, 15 is disposed between each shoe 2 and the supporting framework and is capable of being substituted for the oil pressure so as to transmit the load from the shoes 2 to the framework. As shown in Fig. 1, a ball 11 is located between wedge shaped inserts 14, 15 on the piston 3 and support 5 and it can be adjusted by means of a ring 16 secured to a threaded rod 17. In a modification the ball 11 is replaced by a cylindrical member 21 having convex ends, and means 26 are provided whereby the pressure in the cylinder is automatically limited. At least one of the shoes is provided with a passage 23 adapted to cause the film of oil between the active surface 24 and the ring 1 to communicate with the corresponding cylinder 4. In a further modification, the shoe 2, Fig. 6, is formed independently of the piston 3 and bears against it through the medium of a boss 33. A wedge member 35 replaces the ball 11.
