720,823. Spanners. DIEBOLD, F. March 18, 1953 [March 31, 1952], No. 7459/53. Class 61. In an open jaw spanner, the' jaws 1 and 2 comprise rounded bosses 3, 4 which prevent the spanner when forcibly operated from sliding over the corners of the part to be turned. The outer part 8 of each boss which is adapted to apply a thrust on one face of the nut 7, has a radius of curvature greater than that of the inner part 9 of each boss which is adapted to apply a pull to the opposite face of the nut. The recess between the two jaws is provided with bosses 5 for contacting the nut, the distance separating the bosses from the centre of a line between the grip portions being greater than half the distance between the grip portions. The jaws are somewhat elastic so that when the spanner is under stress the shortest distance between opposite grip portions of the jaws is along a line which passes substantially through the centre of the nut. Spanners having adjustable jaws may be similarly constructed.
