Abstract
Salts of dimethylol and trimethylol phenols are produced by reacting at least 2 mols. formaldehyde in aqueous solution with 1 mol. of a phenol at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. to obtain addition products, e.g. di- and trimethylol phenols or partial condensates thereof, e.g. tetra methylol diphenylol methane, in presence of a basic catalyst, stopping the reaction by addition of a weak acid, removing the water wholly or in part by distillation under vacuum, and then neutralising at least one phenol group in said condensates by heating with an equivalent proportion of base. 94 gs. phenol, 225 gs. 40 per cent formaldehyde and 2 ccm. 30 per cent NaOH solution are reacted until on acidification the product separates into layers whereon it is acidified with an organic acid. The water is distilled off under vacuum and 40 gs. NaOH added in aqueous solution, heating being continued until a sample is found capable of unlimited dilution with water without precipitation. In example (2) the proportions used are 8 kgs. phenol, 14 kgs. 40 per cent formaldehyde and 75 gs. NaOH, a further 4 kgs. of NaOH being added to form the phenolate.
