Abstract

718,569. Feeding webs. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO. Aug. 25, 1952 [May 3, 1952], No. 21291/52. Class 100 (1). A web supply reel assembly for printing- presses comprises a horizontal rotatable shaft, a sleeve mounted on the shaft, a pair of roll spindle supports releasably secured to the sleeve and means for securing the sleeve to the shaft at a point midway between the roll spindle supports. The shaft 16 is rotated by a gear 20 to bring each roll 12 into loading, reserve and feeding positions. The sleeve 26 is keyed to the shaft by a pin 34 passed through a selected one of apertures 36 in the.sleeve and aligned apertures in the shaft. The rolls 12 are supported on spindles 14 on arms 24 of spiders 22, which are releasably secured to the shaft by means of two set-screws in bores in the hubs of the spiders, which bores communicate with a key-way in the hubs for engaging a key extending along the shaft, so that one screw engages each side of the key, the keyway being of greater width than the key to allow of slight adjustment. The spiders are secured to the shaft at desired positions according to the length of the web roll and its desired position along the shaft and the pin 42 is placed in the apertures which are midway between the spiders, so that the weight of the rolls and the web drag will result in equal sagging of the two ends of the roll in feeding position due to torque exerted on the shaft 16.
