Abstract
718,401. Gas-blast circuit-breakers. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Mav 8, 1952 [May 25, 1951], No. 11682/52. Class 38(5) The contacts 6, 7 are separated to an optimum position for arc extinction by the blast and are then further separated to give an isolating gap. The movable contacts 7 of a double-break circuitbreaker are connected via links 16 - 19 to respective bevel gears 15 driven by a gear 14 on a hollow shaft 9 through which the blast is supplied. When the blast valve, Fig. 1 (not shown), is opened, the pressure gas moves contacts 6 outwards a distance X1, Fig. 3. to give the extinguishing gap. Subsequently, the shaft is rotated by a piston. Fig. 1 (not shown), to withdraw contacts 7 a distance X2, the blast valve at the same time closing so that contacts 6 resume their original position, leaving an isolating gap S. Fig. 4. In a modification, Figs. 5 - 7 (not shown), the contact 6 is fixed and the contact 7 has a spring-pressed tip that is retracted into a cylinder by the pressure gas to give the initial gap. the cylinder then being withdrawn into a further cylinder and the tip resuming its original position relative to the inner cylinder.
