Abstract

593,230. Gas-blast switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and KEELEY, F. J. July 11, 1945, No. 17696. [Class 38(v)] In a pneumatically-actuated, air-blast circuit-breaker the two sides of a contactoperating piston are subjected respectively to the pressure of air in a receiver and in a cylinder, and the piston controls a valve normally closing the air-blast passage and maintaining a pressure difference between the two sides of the piston whilst pressure is maintained in the cylinder, means being provided to release the pressure in the cylinder to cause the contacts to separate. Compressed air is supplied to a receiver 1 and cylinder 9 through pipes 8, 22. When air is released from the pipe 22, air pressure in the receiver acts on the outer portions of piston 12, 13, overcoming springs 23 and moving the pistons. Sealing rings 21 on the pistons then separate from flanges 10, and the pistons accelerate as larger surfaces are exposed to the air pressure. The contacts 7 are biased by springs 18 so that they do not follow the pistons until plugs 16 secured to the contacts are engaged by flanges 17 on tubes 14 secured to the pistons, by which time adequate pressure for arc-extinction has been built up in the tubes 5. A series isolator is opened as soon as the current has been interrupted and air is re-admitted to the pipe 22 to close the contacts 7, 6 and conserve compressed air.
