Abstract

716,874. Charging electrolytic furnaces. INDUSTRIA NAZIONALE ALLUMINIO SOC. ANON. June 12, 1951 [June 13, 1950], No. 13960/51. Class 51 (2)]. [Also in Groups XI and XXXVI] In a method of producing aluminium by electrolytic reduction of alumina in a bath of fuzed cryolite or fluorides in general, aluminia is introduced continuously into the bath under a pressure additional to that of gravity, whereby a local formation of a superficial bath crust is prevented. The pressure may be exerted, for example, by a screw and worm, a piston, or compressed air. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 alumina in a feed hopper 1 is discharged by a metering screw 2 into a pipe 3 and fed by a screw 5 into the bath 4. The pipe 10 containing the screw 5 is accommodated within an opening in a S÷derberg anode 11, the pipe and screw terminating near to the surface of the bath. More than one screw may be provided, and the screw or each screw may be mounted outside but adjacent to the anode. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the alumina is discharged by the metering screw 2 into the pipe 3 passing into a pipe 18 from which it is forced by compressed air supplied through a pipe 19. In a modification, a piston driven through a crank or eccentric and linkwork acts to force the alumina through the pipe 18.
