Abstract

726,510. Centrifugal separators; washing granular materials. STAMICARBON N.V. Aug. 26, 1953 [March 2, 1953], No. 23639/53. Classes 23 and 82 (2). A mixture of solid particles is separated into fractions in a hydro-cyclone 1 having an axial length of at least 0.7 metres, the axis of the cyclone being inclined at an angle α to the vertical where α lies between 45 degrees and 135 degrees. The mixture is fed by gravity to the cyclone from a hopper 26 and the light and heavy fractions are respectively collected in tanks 11, 12. Re-entry of material through the outlet 7 may be prevented by the provision of a plate over the central part of the outlet. Both outlets 7, 8 may discharge into back pressure chambers. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), coal particles are first separated by gravity in a wash-box and the shale and middlings which constitute the underflow are passed through a cyclone on a horizontal axis and discharging shale and middlings as the fractions. The Specification gives performance figures and dimensions.
