Abstract

715,889. Valves, rotating on seats. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. June 19, 1952 [June 21, 1951], No. 14816/51. Class 135. [Also in Group XXVII] In means to rotate a valve each time that it is opened, as described in Specification 594,828, a race ring 20, Fig. 1, is interposed between the belleville washer 21 and the balls 17. The race ring has an upstanding rim 23 constituting a stop limiting the flexing movement of the washer. Projections 31 from the outer edge of the race ring may be provided to ride in slots in the downturned edge of the spring-abutment member 25 so that, as the ring 10 in which the ramps 15, Fig. 3, for the balls 17 are formed is not rotatable relatively to the cylinder head 11, the axial load imparted by the springs 30 and the belleville washer when the valve opens, causes a rotary movement to be transmitted through the race ring to the member 25, the springs 30, and the valve. A circlip 27 located in an internal groove in member 25 limits the relative axial movement between ring 10 and member 25. The ramps may be formed in the member 25, and the rotating means may be located between the other end of the loading springs 30 and the valve, in which case the springs would not rotate.
