986,525. Disc brakes. LAMBERT BRAKE CORPORATION. Jan. 12, 1962 [Jan. 23, 1961], No. 1260/62. Heading F2E. A disc brake comprises a housing 12, 14, Fig. 3, providing friction surfaces 18, 20, friction discs 22, 24 engageable with the friction surfaces and relatively rotatable with respect to the housing, a pair of actuating discs 32, 34, means, e.g. balls 38 in inclined seats for axially shifting the discs to urge the friction discs 22, 24 against the surfaces 18, 20 when the actuating discs are rotated relatively to each other, and actuating means for relatively rotating the discs 32, 34. The actuating means include a pair of radially extending opposed ears 46, 48, Fig. 4, on each disc 32, 34, each ear having a generally radially extending and elongated seat 52, 56, a shiftable actuating element 50 and a pair of balls 60, 62, each engaging a seat for transmitting forces between the element 50 and the ears during operation of the brake, the seats 52, 56 being oppositely inclined relatively to a plane between the discs for maintaining the balls substantially centred with respect to the plane during relative movement of the discs 32, 34. As shown, each of the discs 22, 24 comprise a central metal disc 26 having annular bodies 28, 30 of friction material secured to its opposite sides and is splined to the shaft 16. The actuating discs 32, 34 are normally retained in the retracted position by springs 36 and are prevented from rotating by lugs thereon engaging a torque pin 72. The actuating element 50 is formed with oppositely inclined seats 54, 58 up which the balls 60, 62 will ride on outward radial movement of the element 50 to rotate the actuating discs 32, 34. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, the actuating element is in the form of a cage 50a in which are partially received the balls 60a, 62a. A pin 88 engages both balls so as to maintain the member 50a centred with respect to the balls. In a modification there is only a single friction disc and friction surface on one side of the actuating discs.
