Abstract

713,849. Magnetic fluid clutches. TURCK, J. July 25, 1951 [July 28, 1950; March 28, 1951], No. 17575/51. Class 80(2) [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] A device such as a clutch, brake or shock absorber, working with a fluid of magnetically regulated viscosity for establishing between two members a connection offering a "fluid" resistance opposing a relative displacement of the said members with respect to each other, is characterized in that it comprises, to supply the magnetic field which regulates the viscosity, a stationary magnet separate from the said members to be connected and centrally spaced in relation to the said members which surround it. As shown applied to a clutch, a casing 101 carries a fixed core 105 of magnetic material upon which is mounted a field coil 106 connected to wires led in trough passages 107. The core has conical checks 105c, separated from which by a small air gap are similarly shaped annuli 109 of magnetic material connected together by a ring 110 cf non-magnetic material and rotatably .mounted by sockets 111 in bearings 108. One of the sockets 111 is connected to a shaft 103. Surrounding the members 109-110 is a cylinder 114 of magnetic material secured to plates 112, 113 of non-magnetic material rotatable within the casing upon bearings 115, 116, the plate 113 being connected to a hollow shaft 104. The space between the two rotatable sets of members connected to the shafts 103. 104 is filled with a fluid A of magnetically regulated viscosity, such as iron powder in oil. Application of an energizing current to the coil 106 produces a substantially torric field F which couples the two shafts together. Specification 649,553 is referred to.
