Abstract
713,550. Electric indicating systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Oct. 1, 1952 [Oct. 9, 1951], No. 23510/51. Class 40 (1). A device for measuring rate of turn comprises a housing 1 in which an inertia member 5 is rotatably mounted at 4. The housing carries an annular laminated magnetic member 8 shaped to form a series of pole pairs along its circumference which are disposed adjacent an annular magnetic strip 7 and an eddy current strip 6 e.g., of copper secured to the inertia member. The member 8 carries two series of coils 13, 14 so disposed on the poles that when the inertia member is stationary relative to the field member 8 there is substantially no coupling between the two coil series. The primary coil series 13 is A.C. energised and an output is derived from the secondary coil series 14 which is zero for the above mentioned stationary relative conditions and varies in phase sense and magnitude according to the relative displacement of the inertia member and the housing. The device will respond to rate of turn or angular acceleration dependent on the inertia of the member 5 compared with the acceleration rate and the time constant of the member is so chosen that it responds only to the rate of turn components involved. A single unlaminated mild steel strip may be used in lieu of strips 6, 7 and the space between the inertia member and housing is filled with a lubricant 15 having a specific gravity substantially equal to that of the inertia member to reduce shock loads upon the bearings of the arbor 4.
