Class 39(1) [Also in Group XL(b)] A circular waveguide for accelerating electrons is provided with irises 2 and has one or more phase-adjusting sections PS in which the diameter of the guide and the pitch of the irises remain unchanged but in which the diameter 3<SP>1</SP> of the irises is increased or reduced by a substantially constant amount throughout the section in order to adjust the phase relation between the propagated wave and the bunch of charged particles.
