Class 40 (8) A circular waveguide provided with irises, e.g. for use in an electron accelerator, includes a pair of waveguide sections A, B, having substantially the same aperture diameter and phase velocity but different iris pitches Pa, Pb, the sections being inter-connected by a coupling section C in which the diameter of the irises are so chosen that the coupling section acts as a matching transformer between the sections A, B. The pitch Pc of the irises in the coupling section C is the same as that in the section B. The diameter of the waveguide and the aperture of the irises is, however, increased in the section C.
