Abstract
711,866. Continuous casting of composite strip. CLEVITE, Ltd. Aug. 10, 1951 [June 21, 1951], No. 18874/51. Class 83 (1) Apparatus for continuously coating a metal or alloy on to a backing strip comprises an upper die 10 with a cavity housing a sizing die 12 having an under surface recessed to the approximate thickness of the layer to be cast and a lower die 11 having rollers 16, 24 transverse to the strip, and quenching nozzles 20, 23 directed at an acute angle to the strip. The edges of the strip are confined between rails 68, 69 let into the die 10 and rails 87, 88 let into the die 11, whilst lateral movement of the strip is prevented by guides 94, 96 at the front and rear of the apparatus. A cavity 17 through the die 10 and sizing die 12 conducts molten metal from a storage vessel to the end of the recessed cavity of the sizing die. Rearward flow of molten metal is prevented by a transverse sealing member 15 on to which the strip is pressed by an adjustable roller 16. Between the cooling nozzles the strip is prevented from bulging away from the sizing die by an adjustable roller 24 which contacts the strip at a number of points. The sizing die is of a material resistant to chemical reaction with the molten metal, such as a boride or phosphide or carbon, ceramic or a ceramic-metallic compound and the die parts 10, 11 are of a material resistant to heat and thermal shock such as an iron alloy containing 35 per cent nickel and 15 per cent chromium. Before entering the casting apparatus the strip is cleaned, preferably plated with 0.0005 in. nickel and then heated to approximately 1350‹ F. The speed of the strip through the apparatus is from five to twenty feet per minute. Specification 646,506 is referred to.
