Abstract

710,529. Securing together rotor discs. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. March 18; 1953 [Jan. 18, 1952], No. 1564/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXVI] A gas turbine engine rotor comprises axiallyspaced discs 10, 11 having axially-extending hub portions 10a, 11a which abut by means of flanges 15, 20 which are clamped together, the discs having axially-directed annular flanges 26, 28 disposed between their hub and rim portions and which project towards and overlap each other. A pluralijty of taper pins 32 extend outwardly through the hub of one disc and between the two discs and engage in aligned bores in the overlapping portions of the annular flanges. The flanges 15, 20 are clamped together by means of bolts 16a. The flange 26 is formed to provide a pair of radially-spaced flanges 26, 27 and the free end 29 of the flange 28 is disposed between them. The edges of the flanges 26, 27, 29 are scalloped or cut away betweem the portions in which the bores 31 are formed. The taper pins 32 pass through bores 21 in the hub portion 11a of the disc 11 and through aligned bores 31 in the flanges 26, 27, 29, the portion 32b passing through the flanges being tapered outwardly so that centrifugal action tightens the pins in the bores. The taper pins are held in place by a dished plate 33 disposed in a hollow portion of the hub 11a and secured by means of the nuts 16b of the clamping bolts 16a. The taper pins are hollow and are screw-threaded at their inner ends to facilitate withdrawal. The outer surfaces of the flanges 26, 28 are ribbed to form the rotating portion of a labyrinth seal 36, 37. Bores 19 are provided in the hub portion 10a for the passage of cooling air from within the shaft 14. A dowel pin 24 in the flange 20 engages a hole 25 in the flange 15 for locating purposes and a circlip 18 prevents disengagement of the bolts 16a during assembly.
