Raising to an inoperative position 7 a nozzle 11, Fig. 3, and an agitator 22 of a handle propelled suction cleaner having a converter port 41 receiving a converter 46 in a downward direction is effected by means operated during the. insertion of the converter and exerting an upward force on the cleaner body 10. During insertion of the converter 46 a cam surface 49 thereof swings the central portion 30 of a cranked front wheel shaft 27 about a fulcrum formed by the front wheel axles; the shaft 27 being journalled to the body 10 at bearings 28, Fig. 4, resulting in the body 10 and nozzle 11 being lifted clear of the floor. The front face of the converter has a belt receiving notched slot 50, Fig. 5, controlled by a pivoted valve plate 51 having cam surfaces 58, 59 engaging a fixed pin 57 by which the plate is automatically opened and closed as the converter is inserted, and a shoulder 60 engaging the pin 57 to latch the converter in position. Manual heightadjustment of the nozzle 11 within the operating range is effected by engagement with one of the front wheel axles of notches 38, 39 of a lever 34 pivoted about a pin 36 and held in position by a friction washer 37; the said axle being biased towards the lever 34 by a leaf spring 40. In a modification wherein the. suction fan and motor axis is horizontal, the converter 99, Fig. 6, depresses to the broken line position an arm 90 projecting from a cranked axle shaft 87 journaled to the cleaner body at bearings 88 thereby raising the nozzle 71 to an inoperative position.
