Abstract

709,958. Manhole &c. covers. LAURENT, M. P. Nov. 14, 1951, No. 26686/51. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXVIII] A closure for a pressure vessel, pipeline &c. 2 having a tapered man, hand &c. hole 4 comprises a plug 7 which has a surface 8 tapered to a lesser degree than the inner surface 5 of the hole 4 and has a maximum diameter less than the minimum diameter of the hole 4, and interposed resilient metal load and seal rings 15, 21 respectively which have their outer and inner surfaces tapered to conform to the said surfaces 5, 8. The assembly is secured in the hole, with an end flange 10 on the plug 7 contacting the load ring 15, by studs 26 which project from the plug and are fitted with nuts 32 adapted to bear upon a cap 30 which is positioned exteriorly over the hole and is preferably formed with a tapered peripheral shoulder 37 to coact with a tapered projection 36 on the end of the pressure vessel. The load ring 15 is split at 15<SP>1</SP> to enable it to be inserted into the hole 4 and to permit transmission of the internal pressure to the seal ring 21; alternatively the ring 15 is made distortable diametrically, also the ring 21, to facilitate insertion and is provided with axial pressure holes. Opposed flats 7a on the flange 10 permit a tiltable insertion of the plug 7 into said hole 4.
