Abstract

705,429. Rod couplings. WARD, E.L. Sept. 16, 1952 [Sept. 19, 1951], No. 21940/51. Class 99 (1). [Also in Group XXIV.] The sections 1, 1 of a flexible shaft or rod for threading cables through conduits or cleaning or clearing drains are connected by two readily-sep arable parts, and a one-way clutch device allows the sections to be rotated relative to one another in one direction, but gives a solid drive in the other direction whilst permitting the application of an end thrust to the shaft or rod. The clutch device may comprise projections on parts 2, 8 connected to adjacent sections 1, 1, each projection having a. flat radial face 12 and a rounded face 13, the faces 12 engaging together to allow the sections 1, 1 to be rotated together and the faces 13 sliding Àone over the other to allow one section to rotate relative to the other. The parts 2, 8 may be connected by a screwed sleeve 3, the part 8 having limited end movement in the sleeve to allow the faces 12 to disengage. The coupled sections may be coiled onto a swift, and the section just clear of the swift may be rotated by hand or an electric motor.
