Abstract

971,401. Universal joints; flexible shafts; Bowden mechanisms. S. L. COLLINS. Sept. 26, 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 37673/62. Headings F2K and F2U. A ball for use in a universal joint or in a flexible push-pull transmission mechanism has two ribs or grooves in planes at right-angles to each other formed around its surface, lips at the edges of the ribs or grooves rendering them of undercut cross-section over at least parts of their lengths. The lips 2, Figs. 3, 7, may be formed on the edges of grooves 1 extending partway round the ball, or alternatively the grooves may extend all the way round the ball, Fig. 6 (not shown). The ball may be slightly flattened in shape. The ball may be used as the intermediate member of a universal joint, Figs. 12, 14, 15 (not shown), the connected shaft ends each having a fork engaging in one of the ball grooves and locking beneath the groove lips. The ends of the two forks may be of concave shape, Fig. 13 (not shown), to co-operate with the outside of the ball. A series of links may connect a number of the universal joints to make a flexible shaft, Fig. 18 (not shown). A rigid guide 9, Fig. 19, may be provided to contain such an assembly of universal joints, links &c. which may then be used as a flexible shaft or push-pull control. As a modification, the rigid guide may be replaced by a flexible wound casing, Fig. 21 (not shown). The grooves may be of T-shaped or other cross-section, Figs. 23- 26 (not shown). When ribs 6B, Fig. 22, are provided instead of grooves, they may be of T-shaped cross-section to engage in correspondingly shaped grooves 2B in the connected shaft forks &c.
