Abstract

705,050. Magnetic compositions. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Aug. 22, 1952 [Aug. 23, 1951], No. 21121/52. Class 38 (2) A magnetic fluid suitable for use in magnetic clutches comprises a suspension of magnetic particles, e.g. of carbonyl iron between 2 and 100 microns in size or of iron oxide, in a liquid carrier of natural or synthetic oil to which is added a small proportion of water soluble alcohol, mercaptan, ether, amine or amide which is insoluble in the carrier. This coats the particles so that their tendency to settle is markedly reduced. The carrier is preferably a lubricant and numerous examples are given of suitable mineral oils, mixtures of mineral oils and fixed oils and of synthetic lubricating oils. Many examples are also given of materials suitable for. coating the particles in such carriers. Small amounts of antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, extreme pressure and anti-wear agents may be added.
