Abstract

An oil composition for running-in engines comprises a base oil, an oiliness agent, a detergent, and an abrasive which is a finely-divided solid having a Moh's scale of hardness of 4-8 and a particle diameter of less than 3 microns. The base oil may be a mineral, animal, vegetable or an ester oil such as a mineral oil of S.A.E. number 10W-40. The oiliness agent may be an ester of a monocarboxylic acid having 12-20 carbon atoms, e.g. isopropyl oleate; an amount of 0.05-20 per cent by weight of the composition may be used. The abrasive used in amounts of 0.01-5 per cent by weight of the composition may be, for example, silica or alumina. The detergent may be used in amounts of 0.1-10 per cent and may be sulphonate of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal derived from a petroleum sulphonate, an arylalkyl sulphonate or an alkyl sulphate, an hydrocarbon, e.g. a bright stock, a terpene or polymerized olefine, treated with a phosphorus sulphide and stabilized by reaction with an alkylene oxide or an oxide or hydroxide or an alkali or alkaline-earth metal, a polymethacrylate ester of an alcohol or amino alcohol or a voltolized vegetable or mineral oil.
