Abstract
704,782. Rotary-transmission dynamometers. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. March 6, 1952 [March 6, 1951], No. 5456/51. Class 106 (2) A mechanism for indicating twist in, and hence torque transmitted by, a shaft 11, 12, comprises a common sun wheel 27, 28 meshing directly with corresponding wheels 20, 26 of two double planet wheels 19, 20 and 26, 25, the one double planet wheel 19, 20 having an angularly movable carrier 18 and the other double planet wheel 26, 25 having a fixed carrier 24, the other wheels 19, 25 of the double planet wheels meshing directly with two input wheels 14, 15 respectively which are coaxial with the common sun wheel 27, 28 and are fast on, or adapted to be positively driven both in the same direction from, axially spaced portions of the shaft, so that motion is imparted to the movable planet carrier 18 when, but only when, relative angular motion of said portions occurs. The carrier 18 is extended to form a pointer at 22 and the casing of the mechanism is formed with a scale 23. To amplify the readings obtainable, a resilient bar 13 may be substituted for part of the shaft 11, 12 and the twist set up in this bar 13 is then indicated by the above mechanism. The gear ratio 14, 19 must be different from the gear ratio 20, 27 for, otherwise, if those ratios were the same, the carrier 18 would be freely movable about the bearing 17 of the casing 16. Thus the velocity ratio 14, 19, 20, 27 must not only be the same as the velocity ratio 15, 16, 26, 28 but different from one to one.
