Nov. 10, 1952 [Nov. 8, 1951; Sept. 3, 1952], No. Class 125 (2) In applying a cap 38 to a container 13 in vacuo, a pedal 34 is depressed to cause a linkage 35, 36, 37 to lower a vacuum bell 20 until a sealing gasket 22 contacts the edge of a container support 12 whereupon a slide valve 26 carried by the bell connects a vacuum pipe 30 to the inside. of tube 19, on which the bell slides, through apertures 31, the vacuum being transmitted from the tube to the bell by apertures 33. The pedal is then released and the bell is held seated. against the support 12 by the pressure difference. A handle 10 is then actuated to cause teeth 7 to ride up teeth 6 and so to raise the support 12 which presses the container against a stop 23 on the head of the tube 19 to force the cap on to the container. Actuation of the handle 10 also causes the bell 20 and therefore the slide valve 26 to rise slightly on the tube so that the latter and the bell are vented to atmosphere by the apertures 31, the bell being raised to its initial position by the spring 39. For different heights of container, the support is vertically adjustable on the main pillar 1. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the support is carried by a piston working in a cylinder to which vacuum is applied by a pipe containing throttling means either from the interior of the bell or from the vacuum source.
