Abstract

1401879 Tube sealing means SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 12 Dec 1972 [6 Jan 1972] 57359/72 Heading F2P A cap for sealing the end of a tube 22 comprises a distortable sealing member 19 for fitting inside the end of tube 22 (or over the end and around the outside-Fig. 4, not shown), and a piston 8 movable against a spring 10 and normally maintained by said spring in a position in which it closes a port 2 in a cylinder 3. In operation the member 19 is placed in the end of the tube 22 and the cylinder 3 pressed down by hand so that the collar 18 engages a collar 15 on stem portion 17 so as relatively to lift the piston 8 against spring 10 to uncover the port 2. Fluid under pressure is connected to port 2 and further lifts the piston 10 so that the sealing member 19 is distorted by the washer 20 into engagement with the tube 22 so as to seal the end thereof. In the Fig. 4 embodiment (not shown) the piston is first pressed downward by a hand operated knob (36) and fluid pressure is then applied to the top of the piston (8 1 ) so as to distort the sealing member (19 2 ) into engagement with the outside of the tubular body 38. Instead of the collar 18 there may be a flanged plug (24) which fits inside the tubular body (22 1 ) Fig. 2 (not shown). The device may be provided with a flexible extension coupling (29), (Fig. 3, not shown), for a tubular body which is otherwise inaccessible.
