Shaking barrel apparatus for polishing or cleaning small articles comprises a number of spaced parallel spindles of which the axes are inclined to the vertical and which are mounted in ball or roller bearings in a skeleton frame, means on the upper end of each spindle for detachably receiving and driving a shaking barrel, and means for driving all the spindles simultaneously from a common driving motor, the drive including a horizontal shaft driven by the motor and carrying at least one bevel pinion or worm meshing with a bevel wheel or worm wheel on one spindle. A skeleton rectangular framework 10 is built up from rolled steel sections riveted or welded together and braced at each end by inclined angle-section members 11, between which extend two spaced horizontal anglesection members 12 the upper flanges of which lie in a common plane inclined at the same angle as the members 11. A longitudinal shaft 13 is rotatably mounted in spaced journal bearings secured to the underside of the members 12, the bearings being plain, ball or roller ; the shaft is driven at one end by a belt or chain 15 from an electric motor 16. Bevel pinions on the shaft 13 mesh with bevel wheels on the lower end of inclined spindles 19 each rotatably mounted in ball-bearings 20 in a housing 21 bolted to the members 12. A thrust bearing 22 is provided. The upper end of each spindle carries a disc or cup member 23 having in its upper face a circular recess with a coned peripheral wall 24 to receive a complementary boss 25 on the lower end of a shaking barrel 26 ; the spindle extends upwardly a short distance through the disc or cup and is received in a bush 27 in the centre of the boss 25. The shaft 13 may drive the spindles 19 through worm gearing. In a modification, the electric motor drives through belt or chain a short shaft which drives, through bevel gearing, the first spindle ; the first spindle drives the second spindle through a V-belt, the second spindle drives the third spindle through a V-belt and so on. In a further modification, the frame is built up from steel plates bolted together end to end and supported by a skeleton frame.
