Abstract
413,555. Grinding flat surfaces. SOC. MARBRIERE DE PARIS, 3, Place des Vosges, Paris. Nov. 25, 1933, No. 33053. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1932. [Class 60.] In apparatus for grinding flat surfaces, comprising rotating grinding wheels 17 having a planetary motion about a central shaft 8 which is perpendicular to the surface and is moved in a direction parallel to it, the wheels 17 are so shaped and disposed that they contact with the surface to be ground on a generatrix only of the grinding surface. In the form shown, the wheels have conical faces, and are mounted on inclined axles 14, the bearings of which are carried by a rotating flange 12 which is unitary with a sleeve 10 rotated through a driving-pin 9 by the central shaft 8. Bevel pinions 15 on the axles 14 engage a fixed gear ring 18 external to them, causing the grinding wheels to rotate on their axes in a direction opposite to that in which the reaction of the ground surface tends to rotate them. A form of apparatus is also illustrated in which the grinding wheels are cylindrical, and rotate on horizontal axes extending radially from the central vertical shaft. The wheels may be rotated on their axes by the reaction of the ground surface, instead of being positively driven.
