Abstract

702,409. Locomotives. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AKT.-GES. July 10, 1951 [July 15, 1950], No. 16366/51. Classes 79(1), and 79(2) A locomotive is driven by at least one internal combustion engine 7 and has four pairs of driving wheels which are associated with wheel frames arranged towards opposite ends of the locomotive, one pair of wheels of each of the wheel frames mounted or guided in the wheel frame while the other pair of wheels is mounted on the wheel frame and supported for bodily movement about an axis passing through the axis of the first pair of wheels, the drive from the engine or engines being transmitted to all the driving wheels through a transmission drive comprising a change speed gear box 5 mounted on the frame 1 of the locomotive between the wheel frames, a pair of articulated shafts 6, one leading forwardly and the one rearwardly from the gear box to the respective wheel frames and toothed wheel gearing mounted on each of the wheel frames which gearing is driven by the corresponding articulated shaft and drives both pairs of wheels of the wheel frame. The engine 7 is mounted on the frame 1 above one of the wheel frames. A cooling fan 11 is driven by an auxiliary shaft from the gear box 5 above which it is mounted and a driver's cab 14, fuel tank 12 and heating boiler 13 are arranged on the frame 1 above the other wheel frame. In a modification two engines, one above each bogie may be used which either drive the wheels of each wheel frame independently through separate gears in the gear box or are connected to a common set of gears in the gear box. Each wheel frame is attached to the frame 1 by springs 4 and 4a and one of its axles 34 slides in guides 35 in the frame 1. The other axle 33 is journaled in the wheel frame only. The axle 34 has a spherical member 36 at its centre about which the wheel frame can move to a small extent in any direction, this is accomplished by means of the driving gear 32 for the axle which is rotatably mounted in the wheel frame and forms the connection between the wheel frame and the spherical member 36. The member 36 has peripheral teeth which engage internal teeth in the gear 32 in such a way as to permit the movement while transmitting drive to the axle 34. A reversing gear is interposed in the drive from the gear box 5 to the wheels. In each case this comprises a bevel gear on the shaft 6 which engages two bevel gears 18, 19, Fig. 4 which are rotatably mounted on a shaft 17 to which they may be selectively coupled by a dog clutch 20 splined to the shaft. The shaft 17 also carries two pinions 21, 22 which form an auxiliary speed-changing device and either of which may be coupled to the shaft by clutch element 24 having internal teeth which can engage external teeth on the hubs of the pinions 21, 22. The pinion 21 engages gear wheels 25, 26 on intermediate shafts 27, 28 Fig. 5 from which the wheels are driven through gears 30, 31, 32. The pinion 22 engages in gear 29 on shaft 27 and when the drive is through pinion 22, shaft 28 is driven through gears 25, 26 which are coupled by the pinion 21. The auxiliary speed changing device may be omitted if desired The main speed changing gear 5 may be of the hydraulic type.
