Abstract

Textile materials comprising polyethylene terephthalate are coloured by padding or printing a dyestuff on to the materials, drying, and subsequently heating to an elevated temperature under tension to prevent or control shrinkage. Suitable dyestuffs are the dispersed water-insoluble dyestuffs, water-soluble acetate dyes, vat dyes, methine dyes and aminoanthraquinone derivatives, as well as azoic components, and many such dyestuffs are specified. The heating of the material after the application of the dyestuff may take place on a heated drum provided with pins as described in Specification 700,100 or on a heated stenter machine, or in the case of yarn, by passing the yarn over a driven capstan, through a heated tube and then over a second driven capstan. Temperatures of 150 DEG to 255 DEG C are specified. In Examples, (1) a fabric is printed with a paste containing the dyestuff p p-aminoacetanilide --> p-cresol, sodium m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, an emulsion of sulphonated sperm oil and pine oil, and crystal gum thickening, dried, and passed around a heated drum at 230 DEG C provided with pins round the edges to hold the fabric; (2) a fabric is padded with a suspension containing Durindone Printing Red BS, ammonium polymethacrylate and sulphonated oleic acid, dried, and heated on a drum as in (1) to 240 DEG C; (3) a fabric is padded with a suspension containing 3-nitro-4-aminotoluene --> acetoacetanilide, ammonium polymethacrylate and sulphonated oleic acid, dried and heated as in (1) to 230 DEG C; and (4) a fabric is padded with a suspension containing 1-hydroxy-4-aminoanthraquinone, ammonium polymethacrylate and sulphonated oleic acid, dried and heated as in (1).
