Abstract

Fibres, filaments, bristles, fabrics, films and the like made of linear polyesters are dyed in an aqueous medium at a superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature above 100 DEG C. Suitable dyestuffs are the water-soluble sulphuric ester class of acetate dyestuffs, the insoluble dispersed acetate dyestuffs, and the azoic dyes. In examples: (1) polyethylene terephthalate yarn is introduced into a dyebath containing p-nitroaniline --> N-b -hydroxyethyl-N-ethyl-aniline and a dispersing agent, and steam is introduced at 125 DEG C. under 20 p.s.i. pressure; (2) the dyestuff is replaced by 1,4-diamino-2-methoxy-anthraquinone and the steam is at 147 DEG C. under 50 p.s.i. pressure; (3) polyethylene terephthalate yarn is introduced into a dye-bath containing the dyestuff 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline --> sulphuric ester of N-ethyl-N-b -hydroxyethylaniline and steam is introduced at 141 DEG C. and 40 p.s.i. pressure; and (4) similar yarn is treated in a bath containing a dispersion of 4-nitro-41-aminoazobenzene and 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid at a pressure of 50 p.s.i. and a temperature of 147 DEG C., and the colour developed by introducing into nitrous acid solution.
